Friarage Hospital, Northallerton

The Friarage is a general hospital in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, being extended and reconfigured to provide a range of new acute services. P+HS was commissioned to develop the Development Control Plan for the reconfiguration of the hospital through a series of workshops with managers and clinicians.

The new Phase 1 development comprises:
  • Paediatrics inpatient and outpatient services
  • Women’s Health Unit, including early pregnancy unit
  • Pathology department, including aseptic manufacturing
  • Pharmacy
  • Energy Centre
  • Hospital Street
  • Refurbished main entrance

The construction work for the £20m first phase was awarded in late 2003 to Interserve, with P+HS as architects and the main building occupied in Spring 2006. The project was completed on time and under budget.

It was the first project in the country to come under the national roll out of Procure 21 , the NHS’s framework agreement for the delivery of new capital-funded health schemes. Twelve teams (comprising contractors, architects, engineers and health planners) have been selected for the national hospital programme and P+HS are actively working with 4 of the 12 on acute, primary care and mental health schemes in the north of England.

The next phases on the site will include cardiology, maternity upgrading, A&E modifications and mortuary facilities, with dining, kitchen and support services following on.
