Citadel East, Killingworth

Citadel East Killingworth for Dunelm Castle Homes

P+HS Architects were appointed by Dunelm Castle Homes to design a mixed residential scheme on this key redevelopment site in Killingworth, Tyne and Wear. The site is visually prominent lying close to Killingworth bus station and The White Swan Centre and located on the former Killingworth Sports Centre site.

The bespoke design for 131 dwellings incorporates a mix of types allowing a varied skyline, utilising height, scale and massing at key points throughout the development. One of the key intentions for the scheme from the outset was to create a landmark building on the south-west corner of the site and this L-shaped 5 and 6 storey apartment block houses the retirement apartments. A second 4 and 5 storey apartment block provides mixed-tenure apartments.

The large blocks act as a buffer, allowing the development to reduce in scale to 2 and 3 storey family properties towards the centre and East of the Site. Key features of the design are the use of large areas of glazing, mono-pitch roofs, glazed entrances, balconies and aluminium clad lift towers.

The scheme obtained planning consent in late November 2006 and is due to commence on site in January 2007.

• 48No. Houses; mixture of 3 & 4 bedroom
• 42No. 2 bed flats (which include 10 properties to be transferred to RSL & 6 discounted low cost dwellings)
• 41No. Retirement flats with a communal facilities and resident warden

The images above are taken from our 3D model – we use this technique now for nearly all our schemes, providing a great way for clients, planners and potential users and occupiers to understand the scheme. Still views, interiors and animations can all be generated from the basic model.
